Blue Sky Basin Ski Area Planning

Project: Blue Sky Basin Ski Area Expansion
Location: Vail, Colorado
Client: Vail Resorts
At the southernmost reach of Vail’s permit area, Blue Sky Basin set a new precedent in environmentally sensitive trail design and expansion. The 520-acre project area includes three high-speed quad chairlifts serving the 1,910-vertical-foot basin. In addition to providing a groomed, family friendly, backcountry style skiing experience, Blue Sky’s lift terminals, facilities and signage were architectural themed to enhance the areas character.
This project was comprehensively planned and implemented by IAD staff. This work included site suitability assessments, conceptual design options, detailed design of all facilities, way finding and signage design, architectural character visioning, 3D terrain modeling and field implementation design and oversight. Blue Sky Basin opened to the public in early 2000 and has been hailed by Vail’s guests as a resounding success.
